membership site snake oil I have a Google alert on the phrase “membership site” via an RSS feed and each day I click over to what turns out to be mostly spam blogs that give a few paragraphs of nonsense text followed by an affiliate link to some obscure membership site info product.

The amount of garbage out there is stunning.

We’re not “gurus” by any stretch, but I have to wonder when I see some of these information products. I Google the name of the person who produced the product and I can’t find a membership site anywhere that they run.

So at the risk of stating the obvious, be wary of taking any advice on selling content online from people who don’t actually run a membership site. Or, as is common, who’s only membership site is one where they are “teaching” how to start a membership site.

Your first question should always be, “What’s the membership site you started and grew that wasn’t about starting a membership site?”

If the answer isn’t clear, walk away.

If someone’s only experience in selling content is selling an ebook or course on selling content, that’s a problem.

Someone who has had success selling content on bird watching, surfing, landscaping or donut-making is in a much better position to talk about what works.

We don’t claim to have all the answers, but everything we do talk about has been tried on real membership sites that make up the bulk of our revenue.
