Don’t Call it a Newsletter
One more idea about balancing content and sales pitch before I move on.
Like with most things, setting expectations from the beginning with your users will go along way in keeping the unsubscribes of your list to a minimum. One small change I’m going to make on all my membership sites is to stop calling our email list a “newsletter list.”
When I think of newsletter, I think of exactly that – news and information delivered to my inbox or mailbox. This could be a problem going forward as people who subscribe expect a newsletter of information with every email.
I haven’t found the perfect term yet (someone help us out in the comments!), but it should be a word that indicates the email list is an “introduction.” Whether it be an introduction to an idea, a strategy, or a service (the pitch), subscribers to the list can expect to be introduced to something on a daily basis.
“Introduction List” isn’t bad, but it’s not perfect. If, as a user, I saw, “Join our Introduction List!” the first thing that would come to mind is that I’m going to be introduced to people which isn’t correct either.
Mailing List? Maybe, but that’s kind of boring.
Weekend homework for myself: think of a better term for my email list.
