5 Things Content Sellers Must Read / Watch Before 2010

Must view content I’ve had a few days to catch up on everything in my RSS reader and picked out five great pieces of content all membership site owners and premium content creators should read before ringing in the new year:

1. Creating the Big Idea & Selling at Premium Prices
Yanik Silver created one of the first digital products I ever purchased call Instant Sales Letters. In a recent post on his Internet Lifestyle Blog, he boils down all the lessons he’s learned this decade about selling information online into one post. It’s a terrific read and I agree with everything he says, especially when he talks about premium pricing.

2. 14 Guidelines and 13 Case Studies for Designing Subscription Websites
Mequoda.com published this free white paper using case studies from several subscription websites as a guide. See how the design, layout and premium offerings all combine to deliver success for these subscription and membership sites. (Thanks to Ernest for the tip!)

3. 8 Steps To Get 70% of Customers into Long-Term Subscriptions
MarketingSherpa’s case study with subscription site AllRecipes.com on how they enticed customers to join the membership site for longer terms. Encouraging prospects to join your site for a longer period results in more revenue and less attrition so learning how other premium content sites are running their businesses is always beneficial.

4. Membership Site Models – Which One Fits Your Content?
This one is a video so it’s a “must watch” article. The guys over at Wishlist Member did a quick video of ten membership models. If you’re not sure which content sales model is right for you, check out these ten models and decide if one or some combination of them is right for you.

5. Lessons from 37Signals.com
37Signals.com Founder Jason Fried thinks most content creators are crazy for not charging for their content. In this interview with Mixergy’s Andrew Warner, Jason talks about what it took to grow a loyal audience and why every website owner with quality content should start charging NOW.

Bonus #6. 10 Things I Learned This Summer About Growing a Membership Site
Readership here has grown quite a bit in the last two months so for those of you who missed my post this past September, it’s still one of the most popular yet.

Thanks for including my 37 Signals interview in this list. It's one of my earliest interviews and I always wonder if it still holds up.
